Marvel Studios and Disney have finally dropped the first teaser trailer for their solo Black Widow movie directed by Cate Shortland starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, William Hurt, and O-T Fagbenle.

You can check out the official trailer below.

Here are a couple of things we noticed from the new trailer footage along with information that has already been released by Marvel and the cast over the last year.

The film officially takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Presumably, Natasha is now on the run after helping Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes escape the Berlin airport.
David Harbour’s Red Guardian, who may or may not have a romantic past with Natasha as he was married to her in the comic books. Looks to be a friend rather than a foe in the film, which is nice to see given that Scarlett is going to need some help here. We also see Alexei rocking gulag tattoos and is likely broken out of prison.
Natasha’s alternative white Black Widow costume which is a homage to a comic book cover variant from a few years back we also see Yelena Belova in a version of the suit.
The mysterious villain Taskmaster has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has the keen ability to mimic and learn fighting moves/styles just by watching them making him a very tough opponent.
William Hurt’s Thunderbolt Ross appears to be de-aged for his brief shot, the effects look to be unfinished and we’ll be curious to see if he’s behind Taskmaster along with pursuing Natasha after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Also, if the film will be setting up the Thunderbolts. His presence could also be a red-herring (we’ve seen a lot of misleading trailers lately from Marvel). There also seems to be a lot of use of flashbacks in this trailer and placing characters/scenes within the film is going to be a little tricky.
Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova one of the many other Black Widows in the movie and just might take over Natasha’s mantle.
We see Yelena and Natasha tussle a bit at the start of the trailer. It’s then revealed they’ve known each other for years as she calls her “sister”, who knows if that means she is a biological sister.
In some sort of “family” dinner scene, we see that both David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz’s Melina aka Iron Maiden (fellow Black Widow) are actually friends (not foes) and seemingly are teaming up with Natasha/Yelena in the film, they seemingly refer to themselves as a family (a version of Winter Guard?). Not something we were expecting given that Melina has been mostly a villain in the comic books. We also get a brief glimpse of Melina in her Widow costume.
We also see a room with a heap of Widows in costume with their guns out. It’s possible that Ray Winstone’s unnamed character might be the big bad here, but that is just a hunch at the moment given they haven’t exactly made it clear who the villains of the film actually are.
This shot looks to include Ray Winstone’s unnamed character alongside Melina in some military operations room.

There seemingly are more questions than answers with this trailer but given it’s supposed to be a spy action film I’m sure that will be revealed later on.

It will be interesting to see what they ultimately do with a sequel if they actually end up pursuing one and if they continue to cover Natasha’s time before Avengers: Infinity War or indeed pass the torch to Yelena Belova (Pugh).

Black Widow will be the first installment to kick-off Marvel’s Phase 4 on May 1st, 2020.
