David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story) is writing and directing a retelling of the classic Arthurian tale of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight with his A24 film Green Knight. The ancient tale has even been covered by Lord of The Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien.

We’ve been able to reveal some interesting updates on the project, including confirming the studio space, learning who is on the production team, and even exclusively that Weta Digital is involved with the visual effects of Green Knight.

Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s cousin, beheads the Green Knight easily. His opponent survives, however, and the Green Knight demands that Sir Gawain uphold his half of the oath and return in one year to be beheaded. Gawain leaves the court to spend the year traveling.

We exclusively learned earlier in the year during our interview with visual effects supervisor Eric Saindon (The Hobbit Trilogy) talking about Alia: Battle Angel, that Weta Digital would be involved with Green Knight’s visual effects. Weta had previously worked with David Lowery on Peter’s Dragon for Disney, which Eric worked on as a visual effects supervisor with Joe Letteri.

“There are so many projects we are working on right now. Back on the Avatar movies now, we’re even doing a project with David Lowery called Green Knight, which is another fun project and just something on the opposite end of the budget of Avatar, but still another fun script. It’s always great we get to work with these fantastic directors, new projects and exciting things always coming through. “

The film’s cast includes Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider, Ex-Machina), Oscar-nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire), and newcomer Erin Kellyman that recently played Enfys Nest in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Filming on the Green Knight is seemingly been underway in Ireland since last month and we can confirm that one of the production spaces has been Ardmore Studios in Bray, County Wicklow. Ardmore is an interesting and rarely talked about Irish studio space where projects like Excalibur, Braveheart, King Arthur, Penny Dreadful, Camelot, In The Name of The Father, My Left Foot, and The Tudors were shot.

Green Knight’s production team includes cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo (A Ghost Story, Strange Angel), production design by Jade Healy (I, Tonya, Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story), costume design by Maglosia Turzanska (Stranger Things, You Were Really Never Here, Hell or High Water), special effects supervisor Paul Bryne (Vikings, Nightflyers), stunt coordinator Giedrius Nagys (Nightflyers), and a score composed by Daniel Hart (SMILF, Pete’s Dragon).

A24 has yet to give Green Knight an official release date.
