It was recently announced that Real Steel director and Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy would be directing Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Detective Pikachu) in an original science fiction action film titled Free Guy for 20th Century Fox. Levy recently jumped-ship on Sony’s Uncharted movie to direct Free Guy, so there must be something there that sold him on the idea.
Free Guy centers on a background character who realizes he’s living in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.
HN Entertainment can now confirm that they’ve added cinematographer George Richmond to the production, who has previously worked on Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the Tomb Raider reboot, Eddie The Eagle, and most recently the Elton John biopic Rocketman starring Taron Egerton.
We can also exclusively confirm they plan on filming Free Guy in Boston, Massachusetts.
TheHollywoodReporter revealed back in December that Ryan will be joined by fellow cast members Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery, and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery. They shed some light on who they’ll be playing in the film.
Comer will play the avatar, whose name is Molotov Girl. In the real world, she is a mousy programmer who actually created the game but was devastated when it was stolen from her. Rel will play Reynolds’ best friend and fellow Non-Playable Character who doesn’t believe his friend’s seemingly outlandish claims, and Keery will play a programmer who may or may not have a secret agenda.
20th Century Fox has given Free Guy an official release date of July 3rd, 2020.
