Disney looks to be doubling-down on their animation to live-action projects with The Little Mermaid going to be one of their next projects. Given how many visual effects shots would be expected on a film like this they’ll need a very experienced person overseeing them.
HN Entertainment has been able to confirm that visual effects supervisor Tim Burk has joined Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid movie that has Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall attached. Burke’s credits include Gladiator, Hannibal, A Knight’s Tale, Black Hawk Down, Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and The Legend of Tarzan.
We can also confirm prep is currently taking place in London, where stage production may take place.
In December 2017, I revealed at OmegaUnderground they were lining up a fantastic production team that included the following talented people.
Oscar-winning Aussie cinematographer Dion Beebe (Collateral, 13 Hours, Edge of Tomorrow) who has consistently worked with Rob over the years on Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Into The Woods, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Two-time Oscar-winning production designer John Myhre (X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men, Elizabeth), who worked with Rob on Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (which featured mermaids), Chicago, Nine, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Dumbo, Alice In Wonderland, Fantastic Beasts 1-2), who worked with Marshall on Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha.
We don’t know when filming will begin but casting seems to be already underway with recent rumblings suggesting Disney has been interested in singers/actresses such as Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) for lead roles, which isn’t terribly shocking as the film expected to be another musical with Alan Menken and Lin Manuel Miranda tackling the music side of things.
Disney has yet to give The Little Mermaid an official release date.
Rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel (Jodi Benson) is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula (Pat Carroll) to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.
