Neill Blomkamp is gearing up to shoot his next film Greenland starring Captain America/Avengers star Chris Evans for STX Entertainment with production expected to begin early next year. We now have some plot, casting, and character details to share for the disaster film.
HN Entertainment has learned from sources that Oscar-winning actor George Clooney has been offered the role of Dale in the film. Dale is the father of Alison, the wife of Chris Evans’ character. The character is described as being hot-tempered and slightly out of shape.
However, an offer going out to Clooney doesn’t mean the deal has been made. Blomkamp has been able to wrangle high-profile cast members in the past with Matt Damon (friend of Clooney) and Jodie Foster for meaty roles in Elysium, along with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver in his last studio film Chappie.
We also have a new synopsis to share for the science fiction disaster film.
A detached married couple must get their son and themselves to safety after being randomly selected to enter an underground bunker, as a massive object from space threatens to destroy the world in less than 48 hours.
A recent rumor from our friends at DiscussingFilm had Kate Mara in the mix for the film. We have independently confirmed that Mara is indeed in discussions for the role of Alison (Evan’s wife).
Another role yet to be cast is their young diabetic son Nathan.
Delays are ahead for the film as the original start of January has been pushed to February 11th and will wrap on April 5th. Filming will be taking place in Toronto (scouting at the moment) and North Bay, Ontario.
I previously revealed Greenland’s production crew will consist of cinematographer Manoel Ferreira (Zygote) and production designer Peter Mihaichuk (Rabid).
STX Entertainment has yet to officially announce a release date for Greenland.
