I think we were all surprised last month when Kevin Feige announced that Black Panther 2 wouldn’t be part of the Phase 4 lineup, instead, it would be saved for Phase 5. This would be sort of telegraphed by recent comments from Kevin that writer/director Ryan Coogler was only starting the script’s outline/development.
While we don’t have an exact timeline for Black Panther 2’s production or when it will release, we have some early production information to share.
HN Entertainment has learned from a Disney/Marvel source that Black Panther 2 is expected to keep it’s main stage production in the U.S. while the Phase 4 movies are primarily filming overseas. This would be the very first production information we have for any of Marvel’s Phase 5 flicks.
The two main studio locations for Phase 4 films include Pinewood Studios UK (Black Widow, Eternals) in Buckinghamshire, England and Fox Studios Australia (Shang-Chi, Thor: Love and Thunder) in Sydney, Australia.
Yesterday, we were able to confirm that Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness will be filming in England and is expected to be shot at Pinewood.
There have been plenty of reports Disney possibly pulling productions out of the state of Georgia and would suggest that they wouldn’t return to shoot at Pinewood Atlanta Studios or Tyler Perry Studios.
Black Panther 2 has a really good shot at moving from Georgia to Californa, as Captain Marvel was primarily filmed at Sony Studios in Culver City, California.
Manhattan Beach Studios in Manhattan Beach, California could be the second option as they filmed some previous Marvel movies there and the Avatar sequels. However, the facility was recently bought this month by Hackman Capital Partners for a whopping $650 million.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series for Disney+ is the only Marvel production we currently know about filming in the state as that will see cameras rolling in October.
Like with the Busan, South Korea shoot on the original film there will likely going to be secondary filming locations outside of the United States, as with most Marvel movies.
Guardians of The Galaxy 3 was originally set to begin filming in Atlanta earlier this year before the firing of James Gunn last year delayed the production an entire Phase. It remains to be seen if Marvel Studios will stick to the Georgia location after the talk from Disney brass about leaving.
James’ brother Sean recently revealed the film’s script will get some rewrites due to the shuffle as the writer/director has confirmed Guardians 3 will take place after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder (the final installment in Phase 4).
Given that Gunn will need to complete filming WB’s The Suicide Squad before jumping to Guardians, he has plenty of time to make the alternations he needs to the script.
An official announcement hasn’t been made for Captain Marvel 2 directors/screenwriters unlike Black Panther 2 and Guardians 3, however, there would be an expectation that production could return to Sony Studios in California.
Stay tuned as we update with future production tidbits.
Black Panther 2 is currently without a release date but if it shoots in 2021 landing one of the 2022 release dates is a good bet to make.
