Coming off an impressive $20.7 million for Thursday night screenings. Domestically, Captain Marvel is said (via Deadline) to be looking a debut between $155-160 million which would make the film the second biggest opening for a solo MCU film behind Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (earned $202 million domestically during its opening weekend).
However, on the global box office side, Captain Marvel has a chance to beat Black Panther as it could surpass their global debut of $430 million with a projected haul of $460 million, it’s looking like Captain Marvel will end up earning an impressive $300 million overseas this weekend with $90 million or more coming from China alone.
This might be the early signs of Captain Marvel potentially crossing the billion dollar mark.
Brie Larson will return as Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame on April 26th.
I think a sequel is a given as Captain Marvel will certainly be a character that Marvel Studios will want to explore for years to come. I’ll be expecting that the X-Men/Fantastic Four rights will give her plenty of material for future installments, her connections to Rogue getting her powers and there are plenty of aliens that could get into conflicts with her including The Brood (loosely based on the xenomorphs) and The Shi’ar Empire’s Imperial Guard. I personally enjoyed the cosmic stuff from the movie the most and would really like to see her future adventures taking place off-world and expand the cosmic corner beyond Guardians of The Galaxy since Marvel Studios will have a lot more aliens to play with when the Disney-Fox merger closes.
While Marvel’s Kevin Feige has teased ideas for a sequel the studio has yet to officially announce a sequel.
