With the Australian leg of Godzilla vs Kong’s shoot wrapped according to director Adam Wingard, all eyes are on Legendary’s Godzilla: King of The Monsters that is due out in late May.
Some new box office tracking information from BoxOfficePro, has a projection that Godzilla: King of The Monsters could end up with a domestic opening in the range of $40-60 million, which could get a big uptick over the next couple of weeks since that projected opening would be a rather large drop from the last Godzilla film. In comparison, Kong: Skull Island opened to $61 million in 2017 and the first Godzilla opened to $93.1 million in 2014.
Considering that Legendary and Warner Bros. hopes that King of The Monsters will help usher a new cinematic universe for the studio they’ll certainly want bigger numbers during that opening weekend, and the word has been positive from those that have seen it. There is also some extra hype as the film will indeed lead directly to Godzilla vs Kong, which will be out on March 13th, 2020.
Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Warner Bros. has set the release date for Godzilla: King of The Monsters for May 31st.
