Sony Pictures has had a few missteps at the box office outside of the billion-dollar hit with Spider-Man: Far From Home, but new tracking information suggests that the third Jumanji movie titled Jumanji: The Next Level will have a decent opening weekend.
The current projection range for the domestic opening weekend according to BoxOfficePro is between $66-76 million.
For some context, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle earned $36.1 million on its previous opening weekend and this projection gives the impression the sequel is on the path to double that original number.
Welcome To The Jungle would go on to earn a massive $962.1 million globally, in theory, this pumped-up opening could see The Next Level cross the billion-dollar mark for Sony.
The Next Level’s cast consists of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Awkwafina, Alex Wolff, Colin Hanks, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darious Blain, and Rhys Darby.
Director Jake Kasdan returned and I assume would likely be asked to make a third sequel if this upcoming release does make Sony a billion dollars worldwide.
Dwayne Johnson is a busy man as his next feature film is a global heist film titled Red Notice for Netflix co-starring Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Free Guy, 6 Underground). Then, he’ll jump into the DC Comics film Black Adam for New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. which is now said to begin filming next summer.
Karen Gillan completed production on her action flick Gunpowder Milkshake co-starring Lena Headey (Dredd, Game of Thrones) and is expected to reprise the role of Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy 3, once James Gunn completes his work on The Suicide Squad.
Awkwafina was recently announced for the female lead in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings opposite newcomer Simu Liu and will be primarily shot at Fox Studios Australia (in Sydney, New South Wales Australia) with a release date set for February 12th, 2021.
Sony Pictures has given the sequel a release date of December 13th, a full week before Disney unleashes Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
