Dwayne Johnson recently took to his Instagram account to congratulate Disney and Marvel Studios for their success with Avengers: Endgame via a new video post from the gym, and in the process teased a future meeting with Kevin Feige.
“Of course, congratulations to the architect and the mastermind behind this whole thing, Kevin Feige. Congratulations my friend. It’s been so cool to watch and witness and learn, as I watched you and your team just meticulous storytelling over the years it’s just been incredible…and I know our assistants have been trying to get us together for dinner for months now, we’re both super busy boys and I look forward to our schedule linking-up.”
While this doesn’t mean he’ll land a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it certainly suggests there is a direct interest possibly on both sides for the future. However, Johnson has proved he’s willing to work with any and all the studios, plus is already part of the Disney family with his upcoming film Jungle Cruise on the horizon co-starring with Mary Poppins Returns’ Emily Blunt.
There are a couple of characters I’d personally like to see him play and one of them being Prince Namor Mackenzie aka The Submariner. Given his Samoan roots seeing Namor with similar Polynesian roots would make a lot of sense as it did with the casting of Jason Momoa for WB’s Aquaman. I know we’ve all been rooting for an Asian/Asian-American actor for Namor but with Shang-Chi on the horizon that could allow Marvel to consider casting other ethnicities for the part of the Prince of Atlantis, but I’d still love to see an East Asian actor like Dev Patel in the mix.
Many believe after an image tease from director Scott Derrickson on social media there is a good chance Namor could show up in Phase 4’s Doctor Strange 2, which I feel like was recently bolstered after a potential tease in Avengers: Endgame to Atlantis/Namor and could equally show up in Black Panther 2 as well.
Another part that came to mind is Deathlok, as Deadline recently revealed in March that the studio is rumored to be keen on bringing the character into the MCU and may have solo film plans for him. There had been original plans to give him his own movie over a decade ago, not unlike Shang-Chi, before a version was introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Deathlok was an oft-discussed project back in the 1990s when Marvel characters were still a tough sell in Hollywood and a script by Randall Frakes (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) stirred fan hopes but it never materialized. A version of the character has appeared on the ABC series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (portrayed by J. August Richards) and there’s been rumors that Marvel Studios may use the character soon.
I doubt the scheduling would fit, but I’d personally like to see Johnson as the character Ikaris in Chloe Zhao’s The Eternals, as the cosmic superhero is known for his muscular physique, not unlike Thor. I’m not sure hiring another blonde white dude is the best way to go if The Eternals is being talked-up as a diverse project for the studio concerning casting for it as Pakistani-American actor Kumali Nanjiani and South Korean actor have taken lead roles in the film alongside Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie.
James Gunn also has a thing for casting wrestlers with Dave Bautista in Guardians of The Galaxy and John Cena in The Suicide Squad, adding Johnson to the cast of Guardians of The Galaxy 3 could make some sense.
Our very own Nicholas Whitcomb has also suggested he’d love to see Johnson play Beta Ray Bill, an alien that is just as worthy as Thor to wield that Odin makes him his own weapon, Stormbreaker. While there have been rumblings of him being included in rumored Sif Disney+ series, that has yet to be confirmed. Bill could just as easily show up in Guardians 3.
Some concept art from Thor: The Dark World revealed what Bill’s species the Korbinite could look like in the MCU.
Only time will tell if Dwayne Johnson will or won’t join the MCU, but he’s certainly wanted by fans and we’ll be curious to learn what roles he’s interested in playing.
