Dwayne Johnson Confirms Rumor That Justice Society of America Will Be Introduced In ‘Black Adam’

While promoting his upcoming Sony Pictures film Jumanji: The Next Level, Dwayne Johnson confirmed to ScreenRant the previous rumblings that the Justice Society of America (a precursor to the Justice League) would be introduced in his upcoming DC Comics film Black Adam.

SCREEN RANT: JSA was my jam growing up.

JOHNSON: “JSA. We will introduce you to that, the world to JSA.”

Back in March, our pals over at ThatHashtagShow first revealed that JSA would be involved with the Black Adam movie and even mentioned that characters such as Atom Smasher, Hawkman, and Stargirl were being cast in the film.

Late last month, scribe Adam Szytkiel, who was brought on by New Line back in 2017 to pen the Johnson vehicle, turned in an updated draft of the script which is sure to please fans of DC Comics. Szytkiel’s script seems to be taking some cues from Geoff Johns’ early 2000’s work with the character and sets up a battle of heavyweights as it pits Hawkman against the protector of Khandaq!

The studio will be looking to cast an actor, 30-39, to take on the role of Carter Hall with an emphasis on landing someone the audience can believe could go toe-to-toe with the Brahma Bull! The script also features Adam’s fellow JSA members Atom Smasher and Stargirl, the two of whom have often been depicted to be in a relationship in the comics. The studio will be searching for talent, 20-29, to play the duo.

More recently, HeroicHollywood claims the film will also include Doctor Fate and Black Adam’s female counterpart Isis.

This would certainly also confirm that the movie takes place in the past, but how far would be the question given that the Justice Society of America is involved there is a good chance we’ll be seeing multiple periods of time explored.

It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll attempt to give those characters their classic looks or go for an updated take on their costumes.

Johnson also supports previous statements made by Shazam! actor Zachary Levi that their two characters likely wouldn’t be meeting on the big screen until the Black Adam sequel or a third Shazam! film. As they most definitely won’t be facing-off in Black Adam and Levi previously revealing there aren’t any plans for Black Adam to appear in the Shazam! sequel.

SCREEN RANT: Do you think we’ll see Black Adam fight Shazam in that film, or is that later on down the line?

JOHNSON: “Without giving too much away, it’s not in the plans right now. I think the approach that we’re talking I feel really good about, and all of the filmmakers do too as well. It’s an origin story and that’s where we start it and we root it, and then we build out from there. Now, not to say Shazam isn’t on my radar. Of course, Shazam is, but so is all of DC.”

Production on Black Adam is said to kick-off in the summer (possibly in July which may change) once Johnson completes work on Netflix’s Red Notice, which co-stars Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool).

Dwayne recently revealed that cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Godzilla, Joker, Jungle Cruise) had joined the superhero film’s production team.

Warner Bros./Johnson recently announced that Black Adam would be releasing on December 22nd, 2021. This would put the film in direct competition with James Cameron’s Avatar 2.
