TheHollywoodReporter attended the 2020 DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada and have revealed that Disney’s Sr. VP of Games Sean Shoptaw spoke at the event inviting game developers in attendance to “come and play” with Disney’s extensive franchise catalog which includes Star Wars and Marvel universes along with the franchises newly obtained 20th Century.

This could mean that non-Disney game studios could end up getting access to developing original stories using characters from Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, Planet of The Apes, Alien, Predator, The Simpsons, and maybe even Kingsman.

Citing recent examples such as EA and Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, 2019’s sixth-best-selling title, and 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, which was the fastest-selling first-party title in Sony’s history with 3.3 million units sold in its first three days (it has since gone on to sell over 13 million copies), Shoptaw stressed the importance of original storytelling and “reimagining” what Disney characters and settings could be.

The Disney exec extended an invitation to game developers in the room and throughout the industry to “come and play” with its extensive catalog of franchises, which now include many 20th Century (formerly 20th Century Fox) properties such as Avatar and Bob’s Burgers, among many others.

We know about a couple of video games coming or in development stages that will feature 20th Century franchises.

Predator Hunting Grounds from Illfonic is set for release in April.

A first-person shooter set in the Alien universe had been in works from Cold Iron Studios. However, it’s unknown if the game will continue development after The Walt Disney Company recently sold FoxNext Games and Cold Iron Studios to Scopely.

A new Avatar video game has been long-gestating from developer Ubisoft Massive (The Division, The Division 2) and they told ScreenRant this month they’re still working it.

However, I think it’s about time we got a new Alien vs Predator game given we really haven’t had one since 2010.

It is sort of a given that Kingsman could become a cool time-jumping first-person multiplayer shooter or even some bonkers Battle Royale with all sorts of gadgets littered around the map.

With the Marvel stuff, I have a few ideas on that as well.

I think new X-Men or X-Force game in a similar manner of Respawn’s Star Wars Jed: Fallen Order focusing on high-end console third-person combat would be fun to see happen.

There is already an Avengers game coming in the near future but it would be fun get more mature games with those characters given that Wolverine has claws that can cut through people and metal like butter and Deadpool being extremely violent could allow non-Disney developers to tackle more mature material for a wider audience.

Most of the general and global audience really only knows about the X-Men team from the Fox films, so it might a good time for Disney to make a big promotional push to re-introduce the comic book version of the X-Men.

On that note, a narrative Fantastic Four game could be fun as well.

Speaking of mature games, Deadpool certainly deserves his own version of Doom/Doom Eternal meets that recent Spider-Man game.

I also think it’s kind of bonkers that there isn’t a giant Guardians of The Galaxy or Savage Land sandbox game similar to The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
