Disney Reveals First Look At Live-Action Mulan

Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the 1998 Mulan has begun production, and with that has relased their first look at star Liu Yifei in the heroine’s role.

The actress more commonly known as Crystal Liu, plays the role Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior who is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she disguises herself as a man and steps in to take the place of her ailing father, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors.

Disney’s casting directors saw hundreds of candidates for the main character’s role across five continents before choosing Liu for the lead. Also among the cast for Mulan are Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Gong Li and Jet Li. Mulan will film primarily in New Zealand and China.

The production will be directed by The Zookeeper’s Wife filmmaker Niki Caro. The film’s screenplay comes from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver among others. Producers for the remake include Jason T. Reed, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner, while executive producers are Barrie M. Osborne, Bill Kong and Tim Coddington.

Mulan is based on Disney’s original 1998 animated version, which earned $304.3 million globally and earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. The originalstarred Ming-Na Wen as the lead voice, alongside Eddie Murphy and BD Wong, and is regarded highly among the Disney classics. As of now, the film is schedule for a March 27, 2020 release date.
