Disney Could Be Worried About The Box Office Potential of ‘X-Men’ Spinoff ‘New Mutants’

Variety released a doom-and-gloom article speaking towards the recent box office flops at 20th Century Fox and are making claims that Disney isn’t terribly impressed with the upcoming project New Mutants, the final X-Men movie from Fox which would focus on a much smaller story than previous X-Men movies.

Suggesting that Disney doesn’t see much box office potential with the movie, but aren’t directly saying where they’re hearing this rumbling from and could be simply gossip around town.

Disney is optimistic that handing Fox superhero properties such as “Fantastic Four” and “X-Men” to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will improve the quality of these movies, but bumps must be smoothed over in that transition. The studio is unimpressed with “New Mutants,” an “X-Men” spinoff with a haunted-house vibe, and believes it has limited box office potential.

It should be noted there seems to be some speculation mixed in this reporting and we’ve seen similar rumblings circulate about Dark Phoenix, but that feature still ended up getting a theatrical release.

I wouldn’t suddenly make assumptions that New Mutants won’t be getting a release after the studio made assurances at CinemaCon 2019 in Las Vegas to exhibitors they would be.

Then again, there has been talk of reshoots for over a year, but director Josh Boone will be busy shooting the Stephen King miniseries The Stand for CBS All Access in Vancouver until March. This would suggest that Boone wouldn’t have the time to direct those reshoots given his commitments to The Stand.

As far as we know, New Mutants is still set for release on April 3rd, 2020.

Magik, Wolfsbane and other teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while staying at a secret facility.
