We all knew that Marvel Studios was going to make a Doctor Strange 2 and now it’s been announced by TheHollywoodReporter that writer-director Scott Derrickson has closed his deal to return. Adding they will now begin a search for a screenwriter, Derrickson co-wrote the original film alongside Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill (unknown if they’ll return as well). They also mention a production start in 2020 (dependent on a completed script) with a possible aim for a release date in 2021.

Scott Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote the mystical Marvel hero’s initial 2016 outing, has quietly finalized a deal to direct the new installment. A search for a writer to pen the script is about to get underway. Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Stephen Strange, the good doctor-turned-master of the mystic arts, as will Benedict Wong, who plays his right-hand man, Wong. In any case, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the plan is for the script to be hashed out in 2019 with an eye toward a spring 2020 production start. If all goes well, the movie would be casting its spell on audiences in May 2021.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong will reprise their roles.

It’s a huge win for Scott, who recently lost his family home during the wildfires. Now he’ll have a creative output to distract him and hopefully he’ll be able to find a constructive place to put his energy into.

Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel Comics characters but the original film felts a little too focused on special effects and left the story/villain to the sidelines, the best part was the Dormammu sequence which I hope we get to see more of and reveal of the other threats Strange faces on a regular basis. Luckily, it won’t be another origin story so they’ll be able to jump right into some occult action.

I will admit that he’s been better utilized in other films, but I’ll keep an open mind they’ll be able to get him back on track.

Their mention of a possible May 2021 release date is only a guess at this point. Marvel Studios are expected to make their future release plans known after Avengers: Endgame.
