We’ve known for a while now that Disney was attempting to put together a sequel to their billion-dollar live-action Aladdin remake.

TheHollywoodReporter has revealed that director Guy Ritchie will be returning for Disney’s Aladdin 2 along with cast members Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott reprising their roles from the original film.

Guy Ritchie is set to return to the director’s chair, while Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott are expected to reprise their roles as Genie, Aladdin and Jasmine, respectively.

Variety adding that the studio has hired screenwriters John Gatins and Andrea Berloff to write Aladdin 2’s script.

Movement on a sequel has been in the works ever since the film made over a billion dollars at the global box office.

However, from previous statements made by producers it sounds like Aladdin 2 won’t be taking cues from the direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar.

In this animated Disney tale, Aladdin (Scott Weinger), Princess Jasmine (Linda Larkin) and the gang are not as free of the menacing sorcerer Jafar (Jonathan Freeman) as they think. Since their last encounter with him, Jafar has been imprisoned in a magic lamp, but an inept thief, Abis Mal (Jason Alexander), is about to change that. Luckily for Aladdin and friends, Jafar’s parrot, Iago (Gilbert Gottfried), has switched to their side — which is good, because they need all the help they can get.

Director Guy Ritchie has been a busy bee lately with his action-comedy The Gentlemen releasing last month and just wrapped filming on his Jason Statham thriller Cash Truck, a remake of the 2004 French film Le Convoyeur.

The studio is expected to begin shooting their live-action Little Mermaid movie this year at Pinewood Studios UK.

Production and release dates are currently unknown, but Disney will likely want to get cameras rolling as soon as possible.

Aladdin is a lovable street urchin who meets Princess Jasmine, the beautiful daughter of the sultan of Agrabah. While visiting her exotic palace, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic oil lamp that unleashes a powerful, wisecracking, larger-than-life genie. As Aladdin and the genie start to become friends, they must soon embark on a dangerous mission to stop the evil sorcerer, Jafar, from overthrowing young Jasmine’s kingdom.
