The Green Knight’s debut at Austin’s SXSW Festival was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic and with multiple films seeing their release dates moved put into question when we would see it’s release. After the film’s trailer dropped we were excited to see A24’s take on the Arthurian legend and the work from Weta Digital, but how we’ll see the film is unknown.
Director David Lowery has now commented on the film’s release status on The A24 Project podcast (spotted by The Playlist), where he says that nobody knows what will happen with it. However, Lowery seems to welcome either a traditional theatrical or VOD release.
LOWERY: “No one knows. That’s the case with everything at the moment. No one knows anything. All I can say is that at some point audiences will see it. And they’ll see it in the best way possible, given the circumstances. Hopefully, that’s in theaters. Hopefully, theaters survive. I’m a big-time defender of the theatrical experience, and one of the things I love about A24 is that they are as well.”
“If I were just an audience member and I’ve been stuck at home for six months and I wanted to see a new movie, I’d rather see it at home than not see it at all. So I’m confident that it’ll be seen soon, but ‘soon’ is variable.”
Hopefully, A24 will make some sort of announcement of what their plan is for the film’s release shortly.
THE GREEN KNIGHT – An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
