While speaking with Variety’s Marc Malkin on the podcast TheBigTicket, Avengers: Endgame’s Don Cheadle talked about replacing Terence Howard as War Machine in Iron Man 2 and how that came together. Also, he was asked which X-Men he’d like to see join the Avengers and he seems to be very keen on Deadpool interacting with the characters.
VARIETY: Okay, Disney-Fox merger. Which X-Men do you want to come over to the Avengers?
CHEADLE: “Wow. Who would it be…”
VARIETY: Or Deadpool or Wolverine.
CHEADLE: “I think that Deadpool, I think we want to see that. I just want to see Deadpool with these characters and something about that seems insane.”
VARIETY: Everyone is saying it should be Deadpool.
CHEADLE: “Yeah, we want to see how that works.”
We already know that Deadpool will indeed carry over from Deadpool and Deadpool 2 without a reboot, which assumingly means that Ryan Reynolds will have to sign a new contract with Marvel Studios/Disney now that the X-Men and Deadpool film rights are firmly at Marvel.
Disney’s Bob Iger and Alan Horn have all but confirmed they plan to make sequels to Deadpool and keeping them R-rated, something recently echoed by Kevin Feige.
When we’ll see those sequels is a little unclear at the moment as Drew Goddard was tasked to write and direct X-Force along with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were writing a script for Deadpool 3 before the Disney-Fox merger was officially completed. Then again, moving forward with those Fox projects seems to be under the purview of Walt Disney Studios’ Chief Content Officer and Co-Chairman Alan Horn along with Kevin Feige.
It’ll be interesting to see how Wade is integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and if the fourth wall stuff would be just in his head when interacting with Marvel characters in other movies. The Multiverse could allow for mutants to enter the franchise in a slightly more convincing way than just coming out of the shadows.
