While on the red carpet for the premiere of Hobbs and Shaw, director David Leitch briefly spoke with ComicBook about the potential of returning to make Deadpool 3, now that the character is at Marvel Studios due to the Disney/Fox merger that finalized back in March.
LEITCH: “In everybody’s world, everybody wants to make it.”
“So, if I was ever approached to make Deadpool 3, my answer would be, ‘Hell yes,’ but I think there’s a lot of things going on in the shake-up with Fox and Disney and where that whole Marvel world after Endgame is gonna be. When the dust settles, let’s hope that Deadpool lives. That’s kind of ironic, right?”
“I have a lot of ideas but I’m keeping them close to my vest so, if they ever come and I’m grateful enough for them to call, I can share all my crazy ideas.”
I’m not sure a lot of people know this but both Chad Stahelski and David Leitch did some second unit directing on Captain America: Civil War, Kevin Feige also attended a press screening of John Wick which the pair helmed together. So, there are some connections to Marvel Studios already.
We already know that Fox set Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to pen Deadpool 3, and they seemingly were at least developing an outline at some point before the merger. Both Disney’s Bob Iger and Alan Horn have stated publicly they want Deadpool sequels which would likely mean Deadpool 3 is likely still going to happen, when is the bigger question.
While the X-Men are likely going to have five years before their movie, I don’t really see Marvel/Disney waiting that long with Deadpool given how much money the movies are making and the comments made by Disney brass.
Leitch, however, is a little busy these days recently attaching himself to direct Netflix’s The Division and WB’s Undying Love. He also signed a first-look development deal with Universal Pictures which might mean he’ll be busy there as well.
Will Kevin Feige announce Deadpool 3 at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday? I’m sure there is a slim chance that could happen if they’re really dropping all of their Phase 4 plans.
