It sounds like writer/director James Gunn had movie ideas that might have seen some of the Guardians of The Galaxy members get their spinoff as Drax actor Dave Bautista tells Collider that James Gunn had the idea of making a Drax/Mantis movie.
He revealed this tidbit when asked about Drax getting a series on Disney+.
BAUTISTA: “I wouldn’t do a series just because Drax as a series would be really rough with the makeup and everything. It would be too tough.”
“What I would like to do, honestly, this is not my idea I’m stealing this idea. James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax/Mantis movie and that’s what I’d be up for because there’s just too much fun there.”

We already know that James Gunn was rehired to tackle Guardians of The Galaxy 3 and there hasn’t been any information of what he hopes to do after he finishes that trilogy, outside of a desire to make a Drax movie.
At one point, James wanted to make a Thunderbolts movie before eventually tackling The Suicide Squad, which he’ll be busy with for the foreseeable future as they just wrapped and will likely come back for reshoots at some point.
Guardians of The Galaxy 3 doesn’t have an official release date from Disney but could be ready for release by 2023, that’s if they get cameras rolling in 2022.
