Just yesterday, it was reported that Idris Elba is in talks to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad. Now, additional information on the project has been revealed.
Collider first revealed some of the characters that would be appearing including Ratcatcher, He’s normally named Otis Flannegan, but the outlet states they’ll likely be gender-swapping this one, so we’ll see what they do with the name. King Shark is another name being thrown around and this would seem to fill the man-animal quota for the squad. Polka-Dot Man (aka Mr. Polka Dot) who can turn the polka dots on his body into a bunch of different weapons. Finally, there’s Peacemaker, who is so damn committed to peace that he’s willing to take violent measures to ensure it.
Peacemaker is the character James Gunn likes for Dave Bautista, who was very vocal in defending Gunn when the filmmaker was let go from Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Collider also adds that Idris Elba’s Deadshot will be a surrogate father to Ratcatcher, who will be gender-swapped for the film with the role being open to actresses of all nationalities and ethnicities. In the comics, Ratcatcher was a Gotham City exterminator before developing the ability to communicate with sewer rats and use them as an army of rodents.
The 2016 movie, directed by David Ayer, featured characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Captain Boomerang and Amanda Waller, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences.
Given this information, it is unclear if the film will remain apart of the current DCEU or operate outside of it. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.
Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the feature. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are acting as executive producers.
