While fans have been wondering when Daft Punk would return to the world of film scoring this is kind of a surprising choice of project. Italian outlet Repubblica (via Collider & The Film Stage) has word from Dario Argento that French Electronic duo Daft Punk will be scoring his next film titled Occhiali Neri aka Black Glasses.
As they spoke with Dario during an exclusive interview.
ARGENTO: “They are my admirers, they know all my cinema,” Argento says. “They heard from French friends that I was shooting a new film and called me [to say], ‘We want to work with you.'”
He also added some details on the new project which is set in Rome.
ARGENTO: “It will be my return to crime films. It’s the adventure, in the nocturnal Rome, of a Chinese girl and child. In the second part, the escape takes them into the rocky, bushy countryside of Lazio. [It’s] different from the sweetness of the Tuscan valleys, but for me beautiful.”
The film was planning on a shoot in May before the COVID-19 pandemic hit Italy hard (where it will be set/shot) and will see Dario’s actress daughter Asia Argento taking a leading role, the pair haven’t together since Dracula 3D.
Dario is a legendary Italian horror director best known for his masterpiece Suspiria which recently got a remake from fellow Italian director Luca Guadagnino.
SUSPIRIA – Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place.
Argento had reportedly developed a series within the Giallo genre titled Longinus, but updates on that project have been quiet.
Daft Punk famously did the score for Disney’s Tron Legacy which was one of the highlights of the soft-reboot bringing their passion for a retro sound while making the score still feel contemporary. The group is well-known for sampling classic funkadelic tunes.
Dario in the past has worked with the legendary composer Ennio Morricone and Italian progressive rock band Goblin on his previous films. Interestingly enough, Goblin’s theme for Argento’s slasher film Tenebrae was sampled by fellow French electronic group Justice on their song Phantom, this could explain the connection to Daft Punk.
