In February, Deadline reported that director Frank Coraci (The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer) had signed on to direct a new incarnation of Sinbad for Millennium Films titled The Legend of Sinbad, with a script penned by Hellboy’s Andrew Cosby.
The big canvas English-language film will be based on the iconic One Thousand And One Nights character Sinbad, a fictional Middle East mariner who over the course of seven voyages across the seas east of Africa and south of Asia has spectacular adventures encountering monsters, magic and various supernatural phenomena.
HN Entertainment has confirmed that they’ve hired production designer Alan Gilmore (Crawl, Extinction) to work on the fantasy reboot.
Gilmore’s art director credits include X-Men: First Class, World War Z, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Bourne Ultimatum.
The Legend of Sinbad is a co-production with Middle Eastern production company Eagle Films, so I’m going out on a limb here that they won’t end up hiring a white actor for the Sinbad role. Deadline suggested in February that they are planning on putting together a Middle Eastern cast including the titular hero.
Filming is said to begin sometime this fall.
Sinbad isn’t the only fantasy character that Millennium Films is trying revive as they’re also working on a reboot of comic book character Red Sonja. That film recently landed Transparent’s Jill Soloway as the film’s writer and director, after Bryan Singer was removed from the female-led fantasy project.
A release date for The Legend of Sinbad has yet to be official.
