Corey Hawkins, who earned a Tony nomination in 2017 for his performance in the Broadway revival of Six Degrees of Separation, has joined the cast of the upcoming In the Heights movie.
According to Deadline, will play Benny in the Jon M. Chu-helmed film, based on the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes.
Hawkins joins the previously speculated Anthony Ramos, who will take on the central role of Usnavi (originated on stage by Miranda himself). Ramos will reprise his performance on screen, having recently taken center stage in the Kennedy Center’s 2018 semi-staged presentation of the musical.
In the Heights is set in Washington Heights in New York City and focuses on a bodega owner who is closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother’s fortune.
Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker Jon M. Chu is set to direct, from a script from
Quiara Alegría Hudes (Hamilton). Miranda will serve as a producer along with Anthony Bregman, Mara Jacobs, and Scott Sanders.
The film recently had an opening casting call for actors, models, and talent to work on scenes filming this February 2019 through summer 2019 in New York . The film has a moderate $50 million budget.
The Broadway production of In The Heights won the Tony for Best Musical and Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show album. Miranda wrote the music, lyrics and starred in the lead role when In the Heights landed on Broadway. Hudes wrote the book for the musical.
Warner Bros. has In the Heights slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2020.
