There had been some leaked details about the unused script titled Star Wars: Duel of The Fates written by former Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow (along with writing partner Derek Connelly) and some new concept artwork made its way online via Reddit (spotted by ThePlaylist) that seems to confirm those previous details.
Tidbits from the script leak.
- Rose and Finn go a side mission to enemy-occupied Coruscant (would seemingly confirm it wasn’t destroyed in The Force Awakens) for a call to arms by activating an ancient beacon in the old Jedi Temple to call the galaxy to war.
- Rose, Finn, and BB-8 steal a Star Destroyer with vehicles/weapons and the two are captured then sent to a POW camp, Rose is interrogated by General Hux.
- Finn after escaping recruits and convinces a group of Stormtroopers to defect and fight against the First Order on Coruscant.
- Rose and Finn take force-sensitive children (including Broom Boy) to a remote planet for Rey to train the next generation of Jedi.
Quality of this artwork seems to be sightly more pristine than the first round of concept art from The Rise of Skywalker art book.
The Coruscant stuff from the script leak is backed-up in the artwork. Which sees the First Order occupying the city, Finn being part of a prison break and getting citizens/troopers to rally to their cause, the beacon being used to transmit Leia’s message at the Jedi Temple, and a last stand battle leading to Hux killing himself with a lightsaber.
However, I’m not seeing a lot of Rose Tico in here as she was said to have a larger role in the Duel of The Fates script. The concept art seems to be lacking just as much of her and I’m not even sure if the art above is of Rose or not (it very well could be).
We see also Rey in a black costume that seems to mimic Luke’s Return of The Jedi digs along with rocking a double lightsaber, which is pretty cool looking and one piece of artwork on a planet called Mortis facing a large alien creature.
Luke Skywalker returns in some sort of confrontation with Kylo Ren as he’s holding his lightsaber with a force ghost glow around him.
Kylo Ren is seen facing Darth Vader in what might be mirroring Luke’s confrontation with Vader from the original trilogy.
There is a piece of artwork with Leia and BB-8 that mirrors the original Star Wars.
You can check out the rest of the artwork if you click the link at the top of the page.
All this stuff is visually striking and a little upsetting things were tossed completely instead of be re-worked into the other incarnation.
It’s certainly interesting to see how much was scrapped when J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio joined the project, I’m slightly heartbroken that a lot of the Rey artwork never made it into the film including an underwater sequence from The Rise of Skywalker that saw her using her lightsaber to enter the sunken Death Star from below the water.
There should be books written about all this scrapped stuff from this trilogy because it’s certainly fascinating why certain things were removed.
