Christopher Nolan’s upcoming feature film release Tenet is shrouded in mystery and there have been comparisons to his mind-bending dreamscape actioner Inception since the film was originally announced.
Set video/photos and leaked promotional footage circulated online seems to back-up that things aren’t 100% grounded and may have a time-travel/reality-bending aspect to it.
EntertainmentWeekly posted the first official still images from the movie giving us first looks at leads John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki in character.
They also spoke with writer/director Christopher Nolan (Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk) about the film and the action film’s main lead John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).
NOLAN: “We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places.”
“We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way. [Producer] Emma [Thomas] and I have put together a lot of large-scale productions, but this is certainly the biggest in terms of international reach. We shot in seven countries, all over the place, with a massive cast and huge set pieces. There’s no question, it’s the most ambitious film we’ve made.”
The director also reiterated that John David Washington is the film’s lead and sings his praises calling his character the “hero” of Tenet.
NOLAN: “He’s a massively talented actor and physically gifted,” Nolan says of the BlacKkKlansman star, who is a former professional football player. “He’s an athlete and pretty hard for anybody to keep up with, including the different vehicles we shot him from — cars and helicopters. [Laughs] This guy moves.”
The rest of the cast includes Robert Pattinson (The Batman, The Lighthouse), Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Michael Caine (Inception, The Dark Knight), Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The King’s Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kick-Ass), Clemence Poesy (In Bruges, Harry Potter and The Globet of Fire), Martin Donovan (Ant-Man, Inherent Vice, Insomnia), and Himesh Patel (Yesterday).
Tenet’s production team includes cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Dunkirk, Ad Astra, Interstellar, Spectre), production designer Nathan Crowley (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Interstellar), and has a score composed by recent Oscar-winner Ludwig Goransson (The Mandalorian, Black Panther).
Some of the filming locations of Tenet were England, Norway, India, Estonia, and Italy.
A six-minute prologue is attached to IMAX screenings of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and an online release of a new trailer is incoming.
Warner Bros. has set Tenet’s release date for July 17th, 2020.
