Charlize Theron & Amy Adams Reportedly on Sony’s Wishlist for Mystery ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff Movie

It was revealed yesterday by Variety that former Star Trek 4 director S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) had been hired by Sony Pictures for an upcoming female-led Spider-Man spinoff film, they said that Madame Web is an option but couldn’t confirm it.

One detail that we missed yesterday from Variety’s report is that actresses Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Amy Adams (Arrival, Man of Steel) are on a wishlist for the lead role. However, they are adamant that meetings or deals have taken place.

The studio has a list of possible stars, such as Charlize Theron and Amy Adams, but stress that nobody has committed or even met for the part yet.

Wishlists are common when studios are seeking a certain type of actor for a role and it would sound like the lead role would be skewing more in the age range of the mid-40s as Theron is 44 and Adams is 45.

That could certainly mean they’re aiming to cast Cassandra Webb aka Madame Web as the character is normally older than the teenage and college-aged characters that surround Peter Parker.

However, the studio isn’t only looking at Madame Web as Silver Sable and Black Cat were said to be getting solo feature film after Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Silver & Black didn’t come together. Both of those characters could be made slightly older for their cinematic counterparts to attract quality talent.

There had also been rumblings of a Spider-Woman film in development that could see Marvel Studios help make.

Jared Leto and Tom Hardy are already leading a pair of Spider-Man spinoff films with Morbius and Venom 1-2, seeing the studio wanting to secure A-list talent before announcing the project isn’t surprising.

A screenwriter and release date have yet to be announced.
