A while ago there had been speculation that Charlie Cox would be returning to his role as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the few actors/characters to make the jump from the Netflix series to the film universe overseen by Kevin Feige.
Adding to that rumor, another unconfirmed tidbit (possibly more or less speculation) started making waves suggesting that Murdock would become Peter Parker’s lawyer in Spider-Man 3 and that led people also to assume that Charlie Cox would be back in the role and not another actor.
This same rumor recently got amplified by director Kevin Smith on his podcast, only for Smith to retract it as something he simply read online.
However, Charlie Cox himself has seemingly debunked the idea of returning to the Daredevil role while speaking with Comic Book and that if the character were to show-up in Spider-Man 3, it wouldn’t be played by him.
COX: “I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it. If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.”
Adding he’d like the chance to keep playing the character.
COX: “Look, I had a great time. I’m so grateful I got to play that character as long as I did. Of course, I’d love to keep going. I’d love to be involved with it.”
It would certainly put those rumors to rest for the time being that Charlie is showing up in the MCU anytime soon.
Kevin Feige hasn’t officially announced what he’s exactly doing with those Netflix characters after the shows were canceled (alongside most of the Loeb shows) and this leads to many to speculate where they could be sprinkled into other projects.
Spider-Man 3’s production start is a little hazy at the moment with Tom Holland not even aware if the Spidey sequel or his Uncharted film will be released.
Sony recently giving Uncharted the former release date of Spider-Man 3 on July 16th, 2021 while Spider-Man 3 has jumped to November 5th, 2021. These new dates would suggest that Sony is optimistic that they’ll begin shooting Uncharted in the summer and then Spider-Man 3 in the fall. However, any 2020 production isn’t a sure bet at the moment.
As much as people like Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil they’re going to have to be openminded to the idea that if the character does return it might be with another actor behind the mask/glasses.
