Breaking Star Wars news!
On an earnings conference call, Disney head Bob Iger has revealed that the next Star Wars live-action will be starring Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on their new streaming service Disney+.
Details are scarce as they just announced the project but it will serve as a prequel to Rogue One. Cassian acts as a morally ambiguous spy/assassin for the rebellion and seeing him before the events of Rogue One could be very interesting. There is a good chance that Alan Tudyk will reprise the role of comic relief droid sidekick K-2SO.
The biggest question will be, does Diego finally get to touch Jabba The Hutt?
It was recently announced that visual effects house Industrial Light and Magic has started a television division to tackle the Star Wars shows for Lucasfilm staring with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian.
This news does suggest that Lucasfilm and Disney+ will be making some premium material for the streaming service, which should help draw subscriptions when there are competing services like Amazon and their biggest rival Netflix dishing out high-end appointment content.
UPDATE: Variety reports that filming on the Andor series being referred to as a ”spy thriller” will begin next year.
A release date for the series has not yet been announced, but production will begin in 2019
UPDATE 2: Lucasfilm has posted an official press release for the series.
Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced today that Lucasfilm is in development on a second Star Wars live-action series for Disney+, the Company’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service. The series, which will go into production next year, follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor. “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. A release date for the series has not yet been announced.
Diego Luna will be next seen in Narcos: Mexico, the fourth season of Netflix’s massively popular drug cartel series.
