Hot off the news that Andy Serkis was circling the job, Variety reports that Sony is also considering Travis Knight and Rupert Wyatt to helm a Tom Hardy-led Venom 2.
The reports claim that the studio is simply evaluating their options and meeting with potential directors. No deal has been offered and no one has yet been declared a frontrunner. Ruben Fleischer, the man behind the first film, is off the table due to Zombieland: Double Tap.
Travis Knight just came off the recent success of Bumblebee, a Transformers spinoff that rebooted the franchise after Michael Bay’s five-film run. It was well received by both critics and audiences alike, grossing $468 million at the world-wide box office.
Rupert Wyatt famously directed Andy Serkis in 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and has since then helmed The Gambler and Captive State.
Venom 2 is without a release date at this stage, but it is expected to hit theaters in 2020.
