Bond franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson spoke with Variety, the subject switched to finding a new actor to play James Bond as Daniel Craig is expected to exit after No Time To Die.
The pair seem extremely open to hiring a non-white actor to replace Craig, but keeping the character male seems to be a sticking point which is sort of expected given that is how the character was written.
WILSON: “You think of him as being from Britain or the Commonwealth, but Britain is a very diverse place.”
BROCCOLI: “He can be of any color, but he is male.”
Barbara going even further explaining they’re more interested in creating new strong female characters rather than taking existing male ones and gender-bending them.
BROCCOLI: “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”
Barbara isn’t simply giving lip service about creating strong new characters as Nomi played by Lashana Lynch in No Time To Die, an original MI6 Agent character, is said to have taken over the 007 codename while James Bond has settled into retirement.
There is a good shot that Nomi could get her own spinoff film if audiences embrace her.
Broccoli and Wilson recently produced an original female-centric action movie called The Rhythm Section for Paramount Pictures starring Blake Lively and directed by Reed Morano. A sign that a female Bond spinoff could be coming in the near future?
While there have been rumblings of potential candidates for to play James in Bond 26, the film is only in early development with Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, No Time To Die) reportedly in talks to tackle the next film’s script.
No Time To Die is expected to drop a second trailer in the coming weeks and the final Daniel Craig movie will be released on April 8th.
Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
