It’s been revealed by Deadline that MGM is about to close a deal to develop the new Andy Weir novel titled The Hail Mary into a new feature film starring Ryan Gosling. Weir is the author of The Martian which was turned into a film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon.
The basic synopsis for the book sees an astronaut on a spaceship on a mission to save the planet, extremely vague but it’s Andy Weir and could be a little more exciting than that might suggest. Gosling would play the astronaut in The Hail Mary, familiar territory as he recently played Lance Armstrong in The First Man.
A director and screenwriter weren’t mentioned in the reporting.
THE MARTIAN: When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.
