Variety reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo, 10 Cloverfield Lane) hot off wrapping the DC Comics film Birds of Prey has landed the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming female assassin pic Kate directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan with a script penned by Umair Aleem.
The story revolves around a female assassin, who, after being poisoned and given less than 24 hours to live, must go on a manhunt through the streets of Tokyo to take vengeance on her murderer before she dies.
Aleem is also adapting the comic book Danger Girl for director Jeff Wadlow.
What’s interesting is the group of producers involved with the action film includes Bryan Unkeless (Birds of Prey), Kelly McCormick (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs and Shaw), Patrick Newall (Dhaka, Mousal), and David Leitch. Kelly and Leitch recently signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
Birds of Prey has a connection to Leitch also, as his stunt company 87Eleven Action Design is handling the stunt/fight coordination on the DC Comics film. I would assume they’d be working Kate as well and helping to give the action film some serious bite, given their credits include the John Wick franchise and Atomic Blonde.
Filming could begin this year with a possible fall start.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Gemini Man starring Will Smith releases on October 4th with Birds of Prey out on February 7th, 2020.
A release date for Kate has yet to be announced by Netflix.
