On Collider’s TheSneiderCut, it was mentioned by Jeff Sneider that he hearing that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II might be in the mix for one of the male roles in an upcoming Mad Max film from writer/director George Miller.
He also said that the project is expected to be a prequel and thinks that they might end up casting a much younger actress to portray leading to Charlize Theron potentially ageing-out of the role.
Jeff cautioned people from covering the rumor suggesting it could be “bullshit”, but he put it out there anyway.
Yahya isn’t a stranger to WarnerMedia projects as took a role in HBO’s Watchmen series and has a leading role in Lana Wachowski’s Matrix 4.
There had been a rumor not too long ago that filming could begin this fall on Miller’s follow-up to Max Mad: Fury Road, but he’s currently about to begin shooting Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton which will likely take up a majority of his time for the foreseeable future as he is very much involved with the editing/post-production process and not really known to knock-out two massive movies within the same year.
Sneider echoing that sentiment himself alluding to Three Thousand Years of Longing’s production might mean that this Mad Max project won’t be taking place anytime soon.
If Jeff is correct, that could mean that Warner Bros. is at least at the very early stages of considering a cast which could mean there might be movement or an announcement is coming shortly.
What would be a little odd is that this would mean neither Charlize Theron or Tom Hardy would be returning, despite it being called a Mad Max movie it sounds like at least at this point it wouldn’t feature Hardy’s version of Max.
Not including Tom Hardy especially would be odd move after his global awareness post-Venom.
We know that Miller was working on two scripts, one being a sequel to Fury Road and another that would focus on Furiosa.
Outside of George Miller reaffirming recently that he still wants to make his Mad Max sequels not too long ago, nothing has been made official by Warner Bros. or trades about those plans.
