While there are many conflicting stories/rumors of why David Benioff and D.B. Weiss left their Star Wars trilogy from worries of toxic fandom, buyers remorse on the part of Lucasfilm after the divisiveness of the final season of Game of Thrones, scheduling conflicts with their $300 million Netflix deal, and to clashes with Lucasfilm on the creative direction.
One new tidbit from Variety has been revealed about what their movies could have been about and there they would have been set within the Star Wars universe, possibly exploring the origins of the Jedi.
Benioff and Weiss had ambitious plans to take the “Star Wars” universe in a new direction, one that would exist apart from the Skywalker family saga that comprised the franchise’s centerpiece nine-film series. The “Star Wars” period the pair was interested in exploring was how the Jedi came to exist. However, Lucasfilm executives and the creators begin to see their visions for the films diverge during meetings last summer.
Fans might make the assumption this could mean The Knights of The Old Republic, but this actually might have gone further back in time of the Jedi mythos than even that. Because the Old Republic had full-scale armies of both Sith and Jedi forces, this meaning they had both existed for a long time before that.
Essentially a clean slate for creators to make up their own new set of the mythology by not being reliant on the original trilogy, something that has been a problem lately and why the studio is looking past the Skywalker Saga by ending it with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
I guess we won’t know if the planet Jedha would have had anything to do with those plans.
Rian Johnson is reportedly still attached for his Star Wars trilogy, Kevin Feige was revealed to be developing some film project within the franchise, and BuzzFeed claimed that screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Altered Carbon, Alita: Battle Angel, Shutter Island, Ghost In The Shell) was developing a possible Knights of The Republic trilogy.
The next Star Wars release date is set for December 16th, 2022, so the studio has some time to figure out what they’ll do next.
