Deadline reports that Ben Affleck (Gone Girl) has chosen his follow-up to the erotic thriller Deep Water and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel. The project titled Hypnotic will be an action-thriller from writer/director Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City) which will see Ben playing a detective investigating possible high-end heists.
Ben Affleck has been set to star in Robert Rodriguez’s action-thriller Hypnotic, playing a detective who, while investigating a string of impossible high-end heists, becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program.
Hypnotic’s budget is said to be between $60-80 million, which is a lot for a Robert Rodriguez film normally. The director tends to go with smaller budgets to keep creative control and make sure his films are mostly done in-house.
The big-budget pic, which we understand is set at $60m-$80m, comes from Studio 8 and Solstice Studios and is the first project greenlit under a partnership between the two companies. Production is slated for April.
Production will also begin sometime in April, we assume in Austin, Texas where Robert has his Troublemaker Studios facility and has been the homestead location for a most of his feature films.
Robert Rodriguez recently worked with James Cameron for the ambitious anime/manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel, which didn’t do as well at the box office as 20th Century Fox had hoped given it’s $200 million budget.
We’re excited to see what Robert can do with a slightly more grounded film and playing more in the crime/action genre that he started out in with El Mariachi and Desperado.
Robert is also prone to hiring a mostly Latinx cast and we’ll likely start hearing who will be added to the supporting cast alongside Ben Affleck in the very near future.
I don’t think we have to worry about this one being the next Spy Kids installment or something equally silly that he does for his children.
