HN Entertainment has been able to confirm that production designer Sarah Greenwood has been hired to work on Universal Pictures’ Wicked, which will be directed by The Crown’s Stephen Daldry and based on the Broadway musical.
WICKED tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Sarah is likely best known for Disney’s billion-dollar hit Beauty & The Beast, Hanna, Darkest Hour, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and most recently worked on Ben Wheatley’s thriller Rebecca for Netflix.
You might remember that Stephen Daldry was once reportedly attached to direct Lucasfilm’s Kenobi movie before it was turned into a streaming series for Disney+.
This likely means that casting will be the next part of this process.
It will be interesting to see how the film will do considering the musical is successful. However, the last time someone tried to make a feature film set within the world of Oz was with Disney’s Oz, The Great & Powerful that earned $493.3 million on budget of $215 million.
Universal Pictures has already given Wicked a prime holiday release date with December 22nd, 2021.
