While it’s not the $3 billion hit people were hoping Avengers: Endgame would be there is a good chance that the film will end up taking Avatar’s global box office record in the coming days, unadjusted for inflation, of course.

According to BoxOfficeMojo, the film is about $8 million away from taking the crown and if Disney keeps the film in theaters for the next couple of weekends will likely secure that title.

Although, there are going to be people that will have an issue with Endgame taking the crown given the Avatar box office would have a 17% increase because of inflation. It’s box office total accounting for that would be more in the range of $3.2 billion in 2019 dollars.

Still, it’s a huge success for Marvel Studios that was ten years in the making.

There are three Avatar sequels on the horizon and it remains to be seen if they’d be able to either match the original film’s box office tally or surpass it. There is certainly an argument to be made that in the last 10 years Avatar hasn’t exactly become that pop-culture landmark you’d expect from a movie that earned that much money. Given that the mystique of 3D and motion capture technology is now gone will Cameron be able to coax audiences to come out as aggressively as they did in 2009-2010?

Avatar 2 will make half the money of the original at around 1.4 billion then Avatar 3 will make 800 million. They will make money because the studios will ensure its released when there is no real competition for a couple of months. But I have never met anyone passionate about the original.
