One of the more interesting feature film releases on the horizon is The Green Knight from director David Lowery. Ahead of its wide release on May 29th, the A24 Arthurian fantasy film will make its debut at the SXSW Film Festival this month in Austin, Texas.
Here is the announcement made by SXSW on their official website and where you can see the screening during the film festival on March 16th.
The SXSW Film Festival is excited to announce the World Premiere of The Green Knight, a fantasy re-telling of the medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight directed and adapted by David Lowery, will screen at the Paramount Theatre on Monday, March 16, at 5:30 pm.
The film’s stellar cast includes Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl), Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Warrior, Red Sparrow, The King), Sarita Choudhury (Jessica Jones, Homeland), Sean Harris (Prometheus, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Kate Dickie (Prometheus, Game of Thrones), Barry Keoghan (Eternals, Chernobyl), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Ralph Ineson (Game of Thrones, The Witch, Chernobyl) as the titular Green Knight.
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
During our exclusive interview with Weta Digital’s Eric Saindon (Alita: Battle Angel, The Hobbit Trilogy), he confirmed to HN Entertainment they would be working on The Green Knight.
SAINDON: “There are so many projects we are working on right now. Back on the Avatar movies now, we’re even doing a project with David Lowery called Green Knight, which is another fun project and just something on the opposite end of the budget of Avatar, but still another fun script. It’s always great we get to work with these fantastic directors, new projects and exciting things always coming through. “
The Green Knight’s production team includes cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo (A Ghost Story, Strange Angel), production design by Jade Healy (I, Tonya, Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story), costume design by Maglosia Turzanska (Stranger Things, You Were Really Never Here, Hell or High Water), special effects supervisor Paul Bryne (Vikings, Nightflyers), stunt coordinator Giedrius Nagys (Nightflyers), and a score composed by Daniel Hart (SMILF, Pete’s Dragon).
We’re beyond thrilled that folks will get an early look at the film and it would suggest that A24 is expecting some buzz from SXSW to help get word of mouth going after the positive response from the trailer release.
It’s certainly one of the smaller films that I’m most anticipating in 2020.
