Disney continued its dominance in the box office for the summer with the weekend release of Ant-Man and the Wasp. It also marked the tenth time in 2018 that a Marvel character based movie has claimed the top spot at the box office. Starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, the 20th installment of the MCU debuted at $76 million, topping the original film by almost $20 million. Internationally, the film has also opened at over $85 million in just five countries so far.
Adding to Disney’s growing list of impressive numbers was The Incredibles 2. Finishing second to Ant-Man on the weekend at over $29 million. In addition, the sequel became the first animated film to ever reach the $500 million mark domestically. The film also grossed nearly $800 million globally. It’s currently sitting at the 11th highest grossing domestic release and is projected to move well into the top ten.
Over the weekend another notable success was the release of Universal and Blumhouse’s The First Purge. The film has brought home $31 million internationally since its July 4th release.
