The Big Short director Adam McKay is poised to earn some serious awards love for his Dick Cheney film Vice starring Christian Bale. Adam has recently made the jump from comedy to Oscar contender and seems to be still hunting down the right Marvel project to direct. It’s a little shocking considering that McKay is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he has writing credits on Ant-Man (turned down directing) and mentions in a new interview previous talks with Marvel for Inhumans/Guardians of The Galaxy 3 (unknown if he’s seriously interested).
It sounds like that could change if McKay got his way. On the HappySadConfused podcast, Adam also revealed that he would “do anything” to direct a Silver Surfer movie and mentioned Marvel Studios considering ideas for a Nova movie.
“Silver Surfer man, that’s the one I want to do. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because visually….could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer, with the Silver Surfer. At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there man. Where a guy has to make the choice to save his planet. You know Norrin Radd has to save his planet…that, that would be the one.”
“I think they’re kicking around a Nova idea.”
Earlier in the year, Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed a potential desire to make a Nova movie while speaking with ComicBook. In theory, there very well could be some genuine development happening with a Nova movie at the studio.
“Nova is… if we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board,” Feige said in the exclusive interview. “Because of the connection to the Guardians universe, because there are more than one examples to pull from in the comics that are interesting. And you’re absolutely right, he was in the earliest drafts of the [Guardians of the Galaxy].”
Silver Surfer, on the other hand, would be dependent on the Disney/Fox merger, but 20th Century Fox has been attempting a solo movie for over a decade and at one point James Gunn wrote a treatment for it that seemingly went nowhere. A solo Surfer would be key to introducing the character into the MCU as his story is just as compelling as any of the leading superheroes. During the development of the first Guardians movie, Gunn actually asked Marvel to get Fox to agree to let him use Silver Surfer and Galactus in exchange to extend Fox’s film rights to the Daredevil characters.
It’s kind of exciting to hear that Marvel and the people working with them are still game to expand the cosmic side of the MCU, as it’s likely going to be key to keep adding new characters and the merger gives them so many more heroes/villains to work with.
