Variety reports that 20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott are currently early in talks with Star Wars actor Adam Driver to take over a leading role in Scott’s upcoming period drama The Last Duel that was originally meant for Ben Affleck.

Driver would be starring opposite Matt Damon and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Affleck is said to still be taking a supporting role in the film.

Sources tell Variety that Ben Affleck, who originally eyed what would be Driver’s leading role, will now appear in a supporting part along with “Killing Eve” actress Jodie Comer.

Set in 14th century France, the movie is an epic tale of betrayal and justice, told from three distinct points of view: two knights (Damon and Driver) whose bond is tested by treachery and a young woman (Comer) forced to navigate the brutal and oppressive culture of the era in order to survive.

Adam has had a varied career with roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Logan Lucky, BlacKkKlansman, Silence, The Dead Don’t Die, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Lincoln, Inside Llewyn Davis, and the HBO series Girls.

Seemingly picking projects based on the directors.

He most recently starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story and will be in the expected box office juggernaut Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker out on December 20th.

Matt Damon’s next release is James Mangold’s Ford v Ferarri, another Fox release that sees him co-starring with Oscar-winner Christian Bale. That pic is set for release on November 14th.

Affleck is about to begin production next month on the erotic thriller Deep Water co-starring Ana de Armas (Knives Out, Blade Runner 2049) in New Orleans, Louisiana. This could explain the reduced role in The Last Duel.

Ridley Scott has been a busy bee himself as he had been developing The Merlin Saga/The Lost Years for Disney, but for some reason pivoted to The Last Duel instead, possibly a scheduling issue.

He is also reportedly attached to direct a third Alien prequel film but has yet to be officially announced by Disney/Fox.

The Last Duel has yet to be given an official release date by the studio.
