Deadline has revealed that Triple Frontier/Pacific Rim: Uprising actress Adria Arjona is now in talks with Sony Pictures to play the female lead role of Martine opposite Jared Leto in their next Spider-Man spin-off feature film focused on anti-hero vampire Morbius. Arjona recently co-starred with Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds on the Michael Bay action movie Six Underground.
Swedish director Daniel Espinosa is set to helm with Morbius’ production expected to begin this February in London, England. Jared Leto has been previously announced as playing the titular Spider-Man villain turned horror superhero.
Martine is the love interest of Jared Leto’s Doctor Michael Morbius, who turns himself into a vampire after trying to cure his rare blood disorder/disease. In the comic books, Martine has turned into a vampire herself and becomes a villain of sorts as well. It remains to be seen if the cinematic incarnation will take that route.
Sony was extremely successful with their last entry in the spin-off universe as Venom earned an impressive $853 million globally. Placing the Tom Hardy film among the most profitable films ever to be released by Sony Pictures and earning more than most Spider-Man installments. They’re already in development on Venom 2 that will feature villain Carnage and might even include Spider-Man himself.
The studio is also cooking up solo films for Kraven The Hunter, Silver Sable, Black Cat, Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch. When and if these other Spider-Man movies see the light of day is anyone’s guess.
Morbius is currently without an official release date from Sony Pictures.
